Following our making the description of the e-Regata open source. Here are the rules we propose to make a great event:
In order to promote the developoment of zero-emission, low wash/wake, manoeuvrable and reasonably autonomous electric boats, we have decided to publish the description of the e-Regata as open-source, available to anybody in the world wishing to organise such a competition. Depending on the waterway you use, you may need to modify small details.
These Race Instructions (RI) have been developed by Kevin Desmond (watersport historian and founder of VeniceAgenda2028, Hartmut Ginnow-Merkert (European Championship for Solar Boats), and Jeroen Droogsma (Solar Sport One) and Roy Cooper: In case of a discrepancy between the Italian, German, and English text versions, the English text shall prevail.
Any situation not covered by these rules will be decided on by the Jury. Each team shall participate in compliance with recognised principles of sportsmanship and fair play. The responsibility for a competitor’s decision to participate in the race is for his alone.
The following rules have been set up:
An E-Regata ® is a three-day event, open to all types of electric boat – (battery, hybrid, solar, fuel cell etc.), pure fossil fuel boats are banned.
Day One: Public Procession of all boats, both contestants and any others. Boats to carry banner “We Are Electric!” or “Noi siamo electriche!”; The leading boat to have local VIPS (Mayors etc.) on board. All boats must fly their national and/or city flag.
Day Two: Before the start of the two disciplines in front of the public, there will be one General team briefing for all persons on board and team captains. Attendance during this briefing is mandatory for all team captains and recommended for all other team members. As proof of attendance an attendance register shall be signed. The time and location of the General team briefing will be announced by the local organiser
Day Three: Drivers meeting - to inform entrants the layout of the course, role of rescue.
Morning: Driver and passenger (one male, one female). Timed two-way sprints over 300 or 500 metres with points awarded for low wash and wake and sound. The time taken by each competitor to complete a race element (where relevant) is recorded by the Race Committee by means of (electronic) timing (minutes and seconds). Timekeepers may use of a radar gun such as a brand made in USA by MPH Inc. perhaps supplied by the local police and convert to kph. The winner of the sprint earns 9 points, the second 8 points, etc. If the two fastest boats record the same speed, there will be a Match Race.
Wash or Wave Wake measurement presents several options:
Each boat must carry at least four passengers (men, women and children, each provided with lifejackets). Provision must be made to protect them from extremes of weather (sun/rain). Number of passengers, 10 pts/passenger. Sponsors and/or their employees invited to ride on the boats.
If the boats are vastly different from one another, maybe establish handicaps depending on the number of passengers they can carry (or are carrying during the regatta). Points awarded for their handling of waste/garbage. Points for quietness (decibel meter); Points awarded for elegance and decoration (flowers etc). Passengers are invited to generously donate for a ticket. Onshore sponsorship per each lap completed is also possible (eg 25 laps 25 euros). The total money taken is then given to a local charitable cause (orphanage or other). The monies must be hand to the final administrator of the orphanage and accounted for. Of course there is no charging allowed from outside sources.
